98 Years Ago – A Garden City For Grimsby

October 24, 1919 Echo

The Lincolnshire Echo ran this article (second column) about the proposed new Garden City for Grimsby in 1919 – accompanying an article on the Mayor of Lincoln’s frustrations at the lack of post-war housing.

At this point, servicemen were still returning home – indeed some were still fighting in Russia – and a patriotic drive for post-war improvements in housing – for everyone as well as ex-servicemen and their families – was in full effect, as recompense the hardships of the war and those needs which had been held in abeyance through the war.  It was from this drive that the impetus to build the Nunsthorpe Garden Gity would be born.

That Grimsby appeared to have secured funds for this project while Lincoln and other areas were still struggling to build may well have been a source of contention for the paper here!
